Project/Program Overview

We are currently growing our Test Team in Ottawa. Test Engineering is responsible for the design and implementation of test processes for the testing and acceptance of military and harsh service equipment for customers around the world. General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada utilizes the latest in test engineering practices and theories including Design for Testability, Statistical Process Control and Design of Experiments to accomplish this responsibility.

Job Description

Working with our Operations Test Engineering Specialists, you will bring experience in project management, technical leadership and oversight to Test Engineering project teams, and ensuring team alignment for all engineering tasks (DFT, Test Strategy Planning, Hardware & Software). 


The Test Engineering Project/Technical Lead shall also be responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of procedures for the testing and evaluation of production and engineering devices in accordance with applicable product specifications and industry and/or governmental standards. This position shall lead a team that specifies tests to be performed, develops automated processes and tools, compiles data and makes recommendations for changes required in testing equipment, procedures, manufacturing processes, and product designs.


Based on-site and remotely:

This role will be a combination of working remotely and onsite at our Ottawa office. We have a number of measures in place for onsite working – our top priority remains the health and safety of our colleagues


Typical Duties

  • Responsible for day to day leadership and organizational development of Test Engineers, in order to attain program and business objectives.
  • Building and maintaining a team of highly skilled and motivated test engineering professionals.
  • Responsible for Test Engineering team/individual performance leadership through conducting quarterly reviews focused on clear role definition, objective setting, career development, mentoring and training.
  • Within the context of the Operations Test Engineering mandate, actively support the development of a mid/long-term test engineering strategic plans and goals.
  • Strengthening Project Management capability within the team.
  • Define project schedule in cooperation with Test Engineering Manager/Program Management and work to the project plan.
  • Developing the operating budget for Test Engineering tasks and monitoring to the approved budget.
  • Set team goals, establish priorities, monitor and evaluate results.
  • Set standards of excellence and provide appropriate metrics-based feedback mechanism to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Develop process improvement plans including enhancements to the automated testing environment and capabilities.
  • Interact, plan and communicate with the Design Engineering teams to define and develop optimal component, sub-assembly and unit level test requirements and test strategies.
  • Assist Engineering and Project teams on new product concepts and development.
  • Drive the collaboration of test strategies between DVT and Production test.
  • Initiate interaction and alignment with the Production and Engineering organizations in order to achieve continuous improvement of product and process capabilities.
  • Leads the process to evaluate, recommend and purchase test equipment.
  • Lead the support, maintenance and calibration of existing production test equipment to ensure that all on-going internal and external customer needs are met.

Required Skills & Experience

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field required
  • Engineering degree plus 10 or more years’ experience in a Test Engineering environment, including process development experience.
  • Engineering lead experience including the ability to build and lead teams of Test Engineers.
  • Proven ability to foster a collaborative team environment, leading and co-ordinating various disciplines (Engineering and Non-Engineering), to project success, through strong relationship buildings skills, effective meetings, and excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, planning, organization, problem solving, customer focus and teamwork.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience in development and implementation of automatic test equipment (ATE) hardware and software.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience in Design for Test (DFT) and test strategy planning methodologies and requirements and a proven track record in reducing end-to-end test strategy costs.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with CCA Contract Manufacturers during development and production.
  • Knowledge and experience of Defense Industry Standards and requirements.
  • Proven ability to exercise a high degree of judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Proven track record in effectively interfacing and communicating with management and customers (internal and external) on the progress of projects.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance and a positive Controlled Goods Assessment. Eligibility to work in Canada either as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
