  • Project/Program Overview

    Our Calgary team is currently looking for a Junior Software/Firmware Engineer to join our EvO program. As part of the team, you will work in developing the next generation of military communications networking solutions for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense. The program spans five international sites in Canada and the UK where four major teams execute System Design, Application Development, Software Frameworks, and Hardware/Firmware product design. Our Beech Agile Release Train executes on the Firmware/Hardware, including six major hardware product designs that are designed in Calgary, manufactured in Hastings, with automated test development in Ottawa. You will have the opportunity to touch on all aspects of integration from board support drivers, hardware test and debug, environmental test and root cause analysis, firmware development, and product integration/test/qualification.

    • Participate in Scrum events, including Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective.
    • Continually refine Sprint backlog into smaller tasks.
    • Maintain and enhance a complex firmware build system and development environment.
    • Develop continuous and automated test mechanisms using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) development process to validate firmware executing on military embedded hardware devices.
    • Integrate firmware components and perform “white box” validation and troubleshooting activities.
    • Perform detailed design, implementation, and unit testing activities in order to complete Sprint tasks.
    • Work closely with hardware, firmware, system integration, and test engineers to identify defects, resolve issues, and perform verification activities.
    • Perform firmware design and/or analysis functions based on requirements.
    • Prepare and review firmware design documents.
    • Document the analysis, design, and test activities in accordance with development standards.


    • Experience with firmware application development using the C++ programming language.
    • Experience with Linux on embedded processors, particularly the ARM platform, is an asset.
    • Experience with developing software in a Windows operating system (Windows 7, 8, 10).
    • Experience with UML and modelling techniques.
    • Experience with unit testing and test driven development.
    • Disciplined approach to firmware engineering with knowledge of agile development methods.
    • Experience with continuous and automated firmware testing techniques.
    • Strong attention to detail.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Strong problem solving and analysis skills.
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and in an Agile team environment, with minimum supervision.


    • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline is required.


    Minimum 10 year consecutive residence in Canada – for Canadian Secret Security Clearance
