  • Project/Program Overview

    The General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada User Experience team currently has a new opportunity for a User Experience Designer in our Ottawa office. What separates our experienced team from others? Our team delivers a safe and user-friendly experience across all hardware and software deliverables, from the simplest devices to the most complex systems. They take an interdisciplinary and iterative approach to development, focused on understanding and meeting human needs while working in a collaborative agile environment with frequent prototyping and user engagement.

    Our User Experience/Human Factors Team plays a vital role in supporting multiple programs across business lines, while working alongside other human factors engineers, designers, our engineering community, the customer and the end users to create great product designs for the user.

    Responsibilities

    • Conduct, facilitate, and document user focus group discussions to better understand the users’ problem space
    • Review product and system specifications for HFE content; define requirements and user needs
    • Apply UX/HF/design standards (commercial and military), processes, and contractual requirements to the product and/or system design
    • Create user-centered designs to meet problem space definition
    • Prototyping and documenting GUI designs and/or the operator interface of products, and/or installation designs
    • Conduct usability evaluations to refine prototype designs; analyze, document, and disseminate the results of the evaluation
    • Conduct internal subject matter testing or more formal verification testing to confirm human engineering, user experience, or design requirements
    • Review drawings of equipment or software implementation and provide feedback/direction to the hardware or design team
    • Present HFE requirements, designs, and participate in design review meetings

     

    Qualifications

    • At least 3 years of demonstrated UX and/or HF experience presenting user-centered design solutions in a complex military domain
    • Industrial design, graphical design, software product design, rapid prototyping, usability testing
    • Experience in User-Centered Design (UCD), specifically the user-centered design process, user needs definition, observational techniques, and user trials/fields trials
    • Experience with Human Factors integration/Human-
    • System integration in the following areas; operational scenario development, user analysis, functional analysis, task analysis, and documenting OMI
    • Cognitive ergonomics, ergonomics, Human-Computer Interaction, hardware and firmware design, vehicle modeling and simulation, safety, and Agile UX programs
    • Effective written and oral communication skills using the English language
    • Demonstrated abilities to effectively work within a team and lead the human engineering design within a design team and produce team results.

    Education

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Industrial Design, Kinesiology, Computer Science, Systems Design, Ergonomics, Psychology or related discipline with focus in user-centered design and/or human factors engineering/ergonomics/human computer interaction.

    Competencies

     

    The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

    • Implementation of Human Factors, and/or Human-Computer Interaction and end user needs into a design, understanding of physical and cognitive ergonomics
    • Graphical design (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite toolkit especially Illustrator, Photoshop)
    • Review product and system specifications for HFE content, define requirements and storyboard
    • Front end prototyping and templating (e.g. Axure),Rapid prototyping
    • User occupancy modeling (e.g. JACK)
    • 3D modeling in a VR environment
    • HTML
    • Cascading Style Sheets
    • Wireframing
    • Task analysis (including functional, mission function, etc.)
    • The ability to employ new techniques in HCI/OMI/HMI research, design, evaluations as well as new survey and interview techniques for soliciting and prioritizing user needs
    • Methods to identify and evaluate technical/project human engineering alternatives that meet system requirements
    • Methods to assess, monitor, and mitigate HFE risks for both the program and the end user so that end user performance and timelines
    • Apply own judgement and discretion but ensures peer review
    • Time management, organizing work and tasks to meet timelines, awareness of costs to programs
    • Working both independently and within team structure, fostering communication and collaboration

    Nice to Have 

    • Hardware, human systems or workplace ergonomics.
      DOORS, Photoshop (or equivalent graphics tool), Flash, Visio, Visual Basic, or Axure (or equivalent prototyping tool) computer skills.
    • Familiarity with the content and application of military and industrial design and human engineering program execution (e.g. MIL-STD-1472, MIL-HDBK-46855).
    • Workload and situational awareness analysis and evaluation.
    • Methods and levels of system verification throughout the life cycle.
    • Human performance simulation and modeling using tools such as IPME.
    • Ability to coordinate schedules, processes, and deliveries of work products with customers and suppliers.
    • Knowledge of Human Systems Integration and/or
    • Systems Engineering
    • Experience in physical hardware design as well as human computer interaction design.

    Minimum 10 year consecutive residence in Canada – for Canadian Secret Security Clearance
    Applicants will be required to obtain/hold a valid and current Canadian security clearance to gain access to the classified spaces, information and equipment in order to perform the work associated with this position.
