Project/Program Overview

The broad spectrum of work in Land & Joint Solutions requires an equally broad spectrum of skills from hardware, software & systems engineers as well as mathematicians, physicists, and other specialties. We work not only in the direct development and production of military products, but also in the life-cycle support. We work directly with our clients and participate in field exercises to gather information on the real needs of our customers.


BOWMAN is the tactical communications system integrating digital voice and data technology to provide secure radio, telephone, intercom and tactical internet services in a modular and fully integrated system. This program converted over 18000 platforms, just over 10 years ago. General Dynamics Missions Systems–Canada is looking for a working level Software Engineer to join the BOWMAN product development team in Calgary, to support ongoing future capability development.


The successful candidate will hold a software engineer role and participate in a team based environment to carry out various systems engineering activities; applying engineering knowledge and techniques to carry out all stages of software engineering, such as requirements elicitation and analysis, software design, implementation, integration and verification.The selected candidate will work closely with a team of highly skilled professionals in a collaborative environment. High team participation and co-operation is mandatory. The selected candidate will take day-to-day direction from the Engineering Manager (or their designate) and work with other peers assigned to the project.


Typical Duties 


The responsibilities and range of activities may vary, but in general will include:

  • Act as a point of contact for the customer where the nature of the conversation is dealing with issues that are primarily technical in nature
  • Participate in the requirement creation for system and subsystem specifications
  • Develop and document the system, subsystem and software design
  • Develop, document, and manage system, subsystem and software interfaces
  • Interface with specialty engineering disciplines to ensure the optimum system design
  • Participate as part of an Agile team in the design and implementation of the sytem design
  • Implement, test and verify the implementation of the software components that are part of the system design
  • Support integration and verification teams in their integration of the subsystems at each of their incremental test phases
  • Identify, investigate, and respond to defects; resolve and verify issues and problem reports
  • Develop General Dynamics Missions Systems–Canada engineering artifacts including but not limited to specifications, design documents, version descriptions, interface design documents, integration, verification and qualification test plans, procedures and reports
  • Plan, organize and schedule implementation activities for the components that you will be responsible for
  • Identify and mitigate risks, track progress, identify and manage required test resources and recommend appropriate solutions to problems
  • Participate and possibly chair Sytem Design Reviews, Preliminary Design Reviews, Critical Design Reviews, Integration Readiness Reviews and System Problem Reviews


Required Skills & Experience  

  • Minimum 5 years development experience, working with complex voice and data communications systems
  • Knowledge of voice/data networks and Internet Protocols (IP) is required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; extensive experience with technical writing
  • Able to apply problem solving skills to daily activities; strong root cause analysis skills
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to work predominantly in a self-directed fashion with little supervision; work in a team environment is required
  • Positive approach to learning and trying new things

The following knowledge and experience is an asset:

  • Previous experience working with BOWMAN or familiarity with the BOWMAN system and the BOWMAN program is highly desirable. TI-2 experience is preferred
  • Experience with Trade Studies and Design to Cost (DTC)
  • Experience supporting System Integration, System Verification and Systems Engineering teams; participation in integrated team activities
  • Knowledge of Army operations in general, and Military Communications in an operational environment, more specifically, would be an asset

Experience with the any of the following tools is highly desirable:

  • Windows Development; LINUX Development
  • C++, C#
  • RTC.
  • Bugzilla.
  • DOORS.
  • CVS or SNV; GIT
  • Microsoft Visio and Office Suite products



  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical/scientific degree. Candidates with diplomas will be considered with adequate additional experience
  • Professional Engineering status preferred (APEGA P.Eng or ASET P.Tech(Eng.) accreditation), or eligible to obtain that accreditation


Minimum 10 year consecutive residence in Canada – for Canadian Secret Security Clearance
Applicants will be required to obtain/hold a valid and current Canadian security clearance to gain access to the classified spaces, information and equipment in order to perform the work associated with this position.
