    Project/Program Overview

    General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada is staffing for an exciting opportunity to deliver a world class secure next-generation communications system for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in the United Kingdom (UK). General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada is working in partnership with GDMS-UK to design, develop, and deliver an exceptional Command, Control, Communications, Computing and Intelligence (C4I) system based on open architecture and industry standard principles.


    The project includes all phases including System Design, Software and Hardware Design, System Integration, and System Validation. The project will be a multi-site development project with activities spanning several product development groups in Calgary and across the greater GDMS- International business area. Our Calgary team is developing a key software product as part of this offering that provides the operating system and middleware to enable tactical voice and data communications, sensor and device integration, and common application services. Software will be developed for Windows 7/10 laptops and for key hardware products running Linux, also developed by General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada.


    Within an Agile team, the successful candidate will hold a test verification & integration role, assisting in the design, execution and reporting of combined software and hardware level test and integration related activities. The successful candidate will act as the test and integration specialist within the agile team and assist in the development of cross-functional team capabilities. The candidate will be exposed to test activities ranging from validation of custom kernel modules, deployment and verification of services such as DNS, and complex routing protocols, and the design and implementation of complete automated test environments.


    Typical Duties:

    • Work with the Agile product owner to develop test scenarios which meet feature level acceptance criteria
    • Contribute to the cross functional skillset within the Agile team, acting as a product integration and test professional. Assist the development of the team by cross-training developers with test case design and execution.
    • Work to develop automation environments that support a continuous integration environment
    • Execute tests – implement configurations to effectively and efficiently perform the procedures; define any special equipment settings; gather data and document as required
    • Troubleshoot – analyze and interpret data to identify errors in behavior, identify root cause, and make use of tools and resources available to debug and investigate
    • Prepare reports and supporting documentation for all tests and performance measures to demonstrate progress and communicate these with other team members as required
    • Assist with engineering peer reviews of technical documentation, test plans and procedures
    • Conduct himself/herself professionally in all meetings, activities and when included in customer attended events
    • Able to deal with a highly educated multi-disciplinary team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment


     Required skills & Experience:

    • Demonstrated initiative, willingness to learn and continued personal development

    • Strong problem solving and analysis skills
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Minimum of 2 years experience with testing software in a Linux operating system (kernel 4.X) and Windows Operating system (e.g, Windows 7-10)
    • Minimum 2 years experience with software integration and/or software qualification activiites including own test planning, procedure writing, manual and automated testing

    Skills & Experience – Nice to Have:

    • Previous experience with testing in Agile or Disciplined Agile environments
    • Familiarity with the principles of tactical mobile communication systems; familiarity with these in military systems and subsystems development, an asset
    • An understanding of the 7 layers of the ISO network model
    • Exposure to transport layer protocols like UDP and TCP
    • Exposure to network layer protocols like ICMP, IGMP, IPv4, IPv6
    • Exposure to routing protocols like IS-IS, RIP, OSPF, BGPv4, multicast and unicast routing
    • Experience with network test tools such as IXIA and Wireshark
    • Experience with scripting languages such as bash, python and powershell
    • Exposure to test automation tools like Robot Framework
    • Virtualization/Emulation environments: VirtualBox, Xen Server, CORE, QEMU, KVM
    • Source code control through GIT
    • Experience with the any of the following tools, or their equivalent, is highly desirable:
    • Ubuntu Linux desktop and terminal
    • Experience in troubleshooting transport layer network protocols
    • Enterprise Architect, Artisan or Rational Rose
    • SVN / GIT
    • Microsoft Visio and Office Suite products


    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical/scientific degree. Candidates with diplomas will be considered with adequate additional experience.
    • APEGA P.Eng or ASET P.Tech(Eng.) accreditation, or eligible to obtain that accreditation.


    Minimum 10 year consecutive residence in Canada – for Canadian Secret Security Clearance

    Applicants will be required to obtain/hold a valid and current Canadian security clearance to gain access to the classified spaces, information and equipment in order to perform the work associated with this position.


    Limited international travel may be required for this role.
