Project/Program Overview

General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada currently has an exciting opportunity for a Development Services Software Developer in Calgary. As part of our team, you will play a key role in delivering a world class secure next generation communications system for the Ministry of Defense in the United Kingdom. General Dynamics Canada is working in partnership with General Dynamics Mission Systems - United Kingdom to design, develop, and deliver an exceptional Command, Control, Communications, Computing and Intelligence (C4I) system based on open architecture and industry standard principles.

Our Calgary team is developing a key software product as part of this offering that provides the operating system and middleware to enable tactical voice and data communications, sensor and device integration, and common application services. Software will be developed for Windows 10 laptops and for General Dynamics developed hardware products running embedded Linux. The project includes all phases including System Design, Software and Hardware Design, System Integration, and System Validation. The project will be a multi-site development with activities spanning several product development groups in Calgary and across the General Dynamics Mission Systems International business area.

The software product team will consist of several software development teams, each focusing on a specific set of software components and services in the areas of communication, device integration, and common services for multiple third-party software applications. Software development teams follow the Scrum framework for software development. These Agile teams operate as part of an Agile Release Train within larger Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) organization.

The successful candidate will be a member of a Development Services Team working with the other Agile Teams. The Development Services System Team is responsible for developing and implementing the strategy for a continuous integration and delivery pipeline. The environment is using industry standard best practices to allow the software being developed to be tested, integrated, packaged, and deployed using automated tools and virtualized environments

The Development Services System Team is a specialized Agile Team that assists in building and using the Agile development environment, including Continuous Integration, test automation, and Continuous Deployment. The Development Services System Team supports other Agile Teams, providing infrastructure and automation to support the teams, and assists with deployment and release.

In SAFe, Agile Teams are not stand-alone units. Instead, they are part of the Agile Release Train (ART), responsible collectively for delivering larger system and solution value. During the transition to Agile, additional infrastructure work is typically required to integrate solution assets more frequently. To accomplish this, the Development Services System Team helps build the environments and assist with system and solution integration.

  • Create platforms and environments for solution demos, development, quality assurance, user acceptance testing and staging
  • Create products, utilities, and scripts to automate deployment
  • Coordinate with other Agile Teams in order to efficiently share responsibilities, therefore increasing overall performance
